The Facts
GMO Crops: The Big Four
Four crops comprise the lion's share of genetic engineering.
- Corn
- Canola
- Cotton
- Soybeans
Over 70% of processed foods sold in the US contain GMOs
Although GM produce is signified by its PLU Code (an 8 proceeds the fruit or vegetable’s four-digit code), mandatory labeling for processed foods containing GMOs is not required in the US unless the GM product has different nutritional values than its conventional counterpart.

How much GM crop is under cultivation?
Approximately 252 million acres (102 million hectares) of land is currently generating genetically engineered crops. This does not include land that is being sown with GMO seed unwittingly or secretly. 252 million acres is about 1.5 times the size of Texas, 2.25 times the size of Sweden and 3.5 times the size of Italy.

How are genes modified?
Genes can be inserted into plants by the following three techniques:
- bacteria gene carriers
- virus gene carriers
- mechanical means using gene guns or cannons.
